Kinda wana do a proper chalk up if this for a tee. Just random bantering s with my mate Cian led to this bastardization, but I like the concept and I miss our training toward a merby set up. I was invited to play in Sheffield on the mens team though, so I may take full advantage of this after the exams.
You think your knees were bad feeownah… This photo was taken the week before I bought new knee pads…..
Dear lord, how are you still mobile?! :O

I need this so badly! Damn postage and packaging being so much!
So today I announced to the Irish referees that I have taken on the role as head ref of the Dublin Roller Girls. Being honest, this should have been done a lot sooner, but I’ve had so much on my plate of late.
My beginnings as Head ref started off dramatic. A spanner had already been thrown in my works, or more, a screw came loose. I lost one of my most influential refs from the roster. This was a pity but myself and members of the league did try to force a reconsideration. Thankfully, it is not a permanent fixture and he most likely will do good for Irish derby as a whole by sharing his talents for a while.
Onward and upward. Although im missing a screw, we have the technology, we will rebuild, strong, better and faster. This was a shock to start me off but, in a weird way, it was also a calming, a feet on the ground experience for me. It showed peoples confidence in me, their willingness to help and also removed any doubts from my mind.
I originally thought, ok, now i’m here, shit, i’ll need all the help I can get. Terror. As if I was a lonely pebble cast into the sea trying to find my place. I felt that although I must take the lead, I was totally prepared to be back seat driven, this is clearly wrong. This is not only doing the other person and injustice, but to me, and the league that elected me. I was a bit disgusted at myself for thinking I was merely a fresh face.
Thankfully this was the darkness before the dawn. I have a clear mindset now, I have no obstacles in my way, I have no doubts of rank or experience, this role is mine now, and I choose to define that myself. The confidence I have my league has only grown in the past few days. They are truly inspiring people. I have been reassured time and time again. I know that when times get rough, I have a place and people to turn to.
This job won’t be easy. Nothing worth while ever is. I have been given this opportunity and I intend to seize it with both hands and see it to the end. After these last few days, I don’t ever want to see it, the end I mean. Roller derby may be driving me mad, but for me, the only way in derby is forward.
My first milestone is on the 27th of May, 40 days and counting and I have never been more determined to make and impression.
I’ll see you there :)
Game prep:
Arrange the cans of beer around the bottle of rum. The cans are Pawns of the Secret Order, the rum is the King, and the arrangement is called the Castle.
Decide on 4 Zones, and arrange platforms ( chairs, buckets, anything ) in patterns through them. The 5th Zone is the Zone with the castle. You must follow the chair path through the zones.
You can do team play or free for all play. If you choose free for all, chanting is then done in a set layer rotation. If you choose team play, only one person on your team has to reach the finish. Chanting in teams is done team rotation, with team members swapping the chant.
To choose teams, count down from 3, and on 0 raise your right hand to your forehead, displaying a number from 1 to 5. Anyone with the same number is on your team.
To start, someone shotguns a beer. This person chants first.
Gameplay:
Someone yells “1, 2, 3, 4 JFK”. Everyone else yells “FDR”, drinks, and gets off the floor. The floor is now lava. Stepping into it causes you to lose. You can start at the beginning of the Zone you are in, or choose to sit out. If you choose to sit out, you start over from Zone 1 if you decide to rejoin.
If everyone is standing, no one is drinking or moving, the player who is next to chant may chant the name of 2 presidents. If you know something in common between the 2, you may chant it back and drink ( an example would be chanting “Abe Lincoln, George Washington” and having everyone yell back “Cherry tree”. Anyone who yelled back can now drink ). If you don’t know anything in common, you don’t get to drink. The chanter always drinks.
Players can also chant “1, 2, 3”. If this happens, do the number selection again. If your number is alone, you get to drink and move forward. If your number has partners, you don’t drink or move.
The third option is chanting “JFK” and everyone else chants “FDR” and drinks. No moving forward, unless you finish your drink.
You also get to move forward when you finish your drink.
Empty cans are all tossed to the same Zone. This is to keep the area somewhat clean. If someone throws a can into the wrong Zone, go back to the beginning of the Zone that player is in. You can use a bin as a target. Cans do NOT have to go in.
If you reach the King, you have to take a drink from the King to win. If you can’t, go back to the beginning of your Zone.
If you don’t know presidents well, you can any two things.
If you move or drink when you’re not supposed to, you go back to the beginning of the Zone you’re in.
Players are encouraged to lie to each other. Good luck and have fun.
Add your input! What do you think?I want someone to play True American with me!
This sounds amazing, may need a few trial runs, but considering you could change the topic it’s based around, this has such versatility and longevity. However, it’s players may not :p

I think this picture sums up exactly how I feel upon getting my new position as head ref. I have become the leagues new play thing… oh dear!
I have a feeling may become a bit more of a blogger as I see an adventure on the horizon…
Today I found out my colleagues in the Dublin Roller Girls had voted for me to take the role of head ref. This was a goal I realistically had not expected to fill for quite some time. I am now skating only 8 months and personally I feel I have achieved a lot, but nothing could mean more to be than the growing respect among my peers. They have taught me so much and their support is ever growing. One sad point of achieving this status is that my good friend Ray had to lose out.
This is a guy who has thought me how to be a better skater, have greater confidence in myself and is always there for me when I am unsure or otherwise. I would really like to point out, that no matter how my term as head ref goes, if I do right be him, then I know I am earning my role. My thanks really goes out to him and I know he will have my back every step of the way. (Unless I am diabolically shit, but l digress :P).
I know I am not the most advanced skater, I know I am short on bout experience, but I know I can, if I put my mind to it, do this role justice. I will learn to be a better skater, I will learn to be decisive without ruling out opinion and I will do all I can to make my team happy that they have given me this opportunity.
I will admit, I am terrified, but I feel if I wasn’t I wouldn’t fully respect the responsibility I have been given. My terror isn’t one that will inhibit my abilities, it in fact will just drive me to do better and in time over come it. I have the support of my friends, already helping me prepare for this journey I am about to part take in. I have been told I face “an uphill battle” a steep one at that, but I was also told I can do it and to hear that statement calmed me into the sense of, I have to and I will.
It was never going to be easy, it will be work, it will be challenging but it will be fun. Some would call it a roller coasters ride, this is roller derby and that’s much better!
I really dig the style of these.
